Roblox Boosts Safety with Age Tech & Global Ratings

Roblox is implementing significant enhancements to its safety infrastructure, including a comprehensive rollout of age estimation technology and a partnership with the International Age Rating Coalition (IARC). These moves come in the wake of ongoing legal challenges concerning child safety on the popular online gaming platform.

Enhanced Age Verification for All Users

By the end of the year, Roblox will extend its sophisticated age estimation system to all users who engage with its communication features, such as voice and text chat. This system analyzes selfie scans, examining facial characteristics to determine a user's age. This technology is designed to work in conjunction with other verification methods, including ID verification and confirmed parental consent, aiming for a more precise age assessment than traditional birth year input during account creation. Roblox also plans to introduce new features to further restrict interactions between adult and minor users on its platform.

Global Content Ratings through IARC Partnership

In a significant shift, Roblox will adopt the IARC's standardized system for content and maturity labels, replacing its proprietary ratings. This integration ensures that users worldwide will encounter familiar age and content ratings relevant to their region. For instance, U.S. users will see ESRB ratings, while users in Germany will be presented with USK ratings, and those in other European countries and the UK will see PEGI classifications. This global approach aims to provide parents with clearer insights into game content, highlighting elements such as violence, blood and gore, substance use, gambling, and adult language.

Continued Commitment to User Safety

These latest developments build upon earlier safety initiatives introduced by Roblox in July. The company previously rolled out an age verification system utilizing video selfies, which helps restrict access to features like unfiltered voice and text chat for users under 13. For users aged 13 to 17, Roblox has implemented a system that requires real-world verification for adding "trusted connections," preventing the addition of individuals not known personally through methods like contact imports or QR code scans.

The platform's enhanced safety measures also align with a growing global trend of stricter regulations requiring social platforms to verify user ages. Legislation such as the U.K.'s Online Safety Act and Mississippi's age assurance law are examples of this expanding regulatory landscape, prompting some platforms to adjust their service offerings in specific regions.

Existing Safety Tools and Ongoing Challenges

Roblox has a history of investing in safety technologies. The platform utilizes tools like Roblox Sentinel, an open-source AI system designed to detect early indicators of child endangerment. Additionally, parental controls, communication restriction tools, and proactive server monitoring to identify and remove rule-breaking communities are already in place.

Despite these extensive efforts, reports persist of child predators gaining access to the platform and targeting children. Legal complaints filed by state attorneys general and lawsuits in various states highlight these ongoing concerns. Recent investigations have also suggested that children on Roblox may still encounter inappropriate content and interact with malicious actors. Furthermore, issues like the virtual item trading in the game "Grow a Garden" have raised parental alarms about potential exploitation and pressure to spend real money.

While the new rating system may not eliminate all negative experiences, it is expected to offer parents a more valuable resource for understanding the games their children are engaging with. Roblox's Chief Safety Officer, Matt Kaufman, stated that the company is "committed to creating a safe platform for our users and empowering parents to make the best decision for their children." He expressed optimism that the IARC partnership will enhance clarity and confidence for parents globally regarding age-appropriate content.
