2026 AMG E 53 Wagon: Power, Practicality, and Plug-In Hybrid

Mercedes-AMG is shaking up the wagon scene with the 2026 E 53 plug-in hybrid. This new model neatly bridges the gap between the more mainstream E 450 All-Terrain and the highly anticipated E 63. What's truly impressive is the E 53's powertrain: a 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline-six engine paired with an electric motor, delivering a combined output that rivals the previous generation's V-8 powered E 63. This translates to a substantial 604 horsepower propelling this luxurious, mid-size sport wagon.
The AMG DNA is unmistakable. Expect exhilarating acceleration, a firm ride, and noticeable tire noise. However, these characteristics are complemented by exceptional body control in sharp corners and a suspension system that effectively absorbs road imperfections during everyday driving. The readily available power adds to the overall driving enjoyment.
Mercedes has thoughtfully calibrated the E 53's driving modes. Comfort mode lives up to its name, while Sport mode sharpens the responses. Sport+ amps up the aggression, and Race mode is best reserved for track days or spirited driving sessions.
The transmission delivers quick shifts, perhaps even a tad too aggressively. Some might prefer smoother gear changes without compromising the vehicle's sporty character. A recurring critique revolved around the brakes, described as somewhat soft and inconsistent, an issue not typically found in non-plug-in E-Class models.
One editor noted a slight delay between the electric motor's peak output and the engagement of the gasoline engine, resulting in a perceived dip in power. However, other reviewers praised the seamless transition, suggesting individual sensitivities might play a role.
While the touch-sensitive controls on the steering wheel are functional, traditional physical buttons remain a preferred option for many. The MBUX infotainment system has been refined with simpler tile icons. The test vehicle featured the Super Screen, offering sharp graphics and detailed navigation without the overwhelming presence of the full Hyperscreen.
The interior boasts exceptional ambient lighting and high-quality materials. The test car showcased an elegant two-tone black and white design, incorporating a stylish mix of chrome, satin metals, carbon fiber, and suede accents. The spacious rear seats receive the same attention to detail, including dedicated air vents in the B-pillars and center console, as well as electronic climate controls. The E wagon also offers a generously sized cargo area with a convenient power-retracting cover.
The classic design and pleasing proportions of Mercedes wagons are well-represented in this model. It complements the 2025 E 53 hybrid sedan and provides approximately 41 miles of electric range, minimizing range anxiety. This is yet another compelling reason to appreciate this new AMG wagon version of the 2025 MotorTrend Car of the Year.
This review was part of the 2026 Car of the Year (COTY) evaluation, which assesses vehicles based on six key criteria: efficiency, design, safety, engineering excellence, value, and performance of intended function. To be eligible, vehicles must be either entirely new or significantly redesigned.
